We are such interesting creatures and Paris Hilton, for one, must just love us! After all, we seem to love watching her and others like her and will go out of our way and spend all kinds of money to indulge our curiosity! In the meantime we miss the ever-present opportunity to watch ourselves! To self-observe.
What’s more, we are often so impressed by research that’s done on people not unlike ourselves, yet we feel ill-equipped to do our own research on ourselves! In fact, we’re likely to be turned off by the very thought, dismissing such research and ourselves as excruciatingly boring, too difficult and morbidly indulgent for even considering it. And typically, we round off all these judgments with the one that drives the final nail into the coffin of self-observation – our gross incompetence at conducting such research.
Yes, we are funny things especially because, of all the reasons we may have for not conducting research on ourselves, the one about our incompetence is probably the most valid.
Why do I say that? Well, for the simple reason that unlike any good researcher worth her/his salt, we self-appointed demigods are doomed to self-judgment rather than objective self-observation. It’s no wonder we shy away from it. Self-judgment leaves us feeling awful about ourselves and that is not a position or state of power. If anything, it feels as if we are cut off from our natural power.
Self-observation, on the other hand, is one of the most empowering and loving things we could ever do for ourselves. It keeps our focus inward but rather than burn us with judgment, it enlightens us with awareness. Now that’s a truly beautiful and empowering experience.
You see, you don’t need to deem yourself bad, deficient or wrong in order to aspire for good, complete and true! In fact, when you truly self-observe and not self-judge, you are likely to find that sitting beneath the façade of mundane thoughts, words and reactions is a SELF that is vast, all-powerful, all-knowing, peaceful and joyous. Some people might call that ‘SELF’ god. I call it Love.
The Love Course is a course in self-observation. It is about learning to live from that place of love by first becoming familiar with it and importantly, by becoming familiar with what it is not! As you learn to observe your feelings, you become increasingly aware in a very holistic way i.e. in your body as well as your mind what your beliefs are and how they impact on you.
During the course, you will be encouraged to
“…pay close attention to your experiences, especially your feelings. They are your raw/primary data. They tell you how you are travelling – whether you are travelling freely and openly in love or whether you are closing yourself off from love” – The Love Course
“In truth, you do experience feelings that are associated with love but, more often than not, you don’t recognize them! Why? Because the beliefs, ideas and expectations you have acquired about love don’t correspond to the experiences you have” – The Love Course
This is big stuff. Life-changing stuff. Stuff you cannot intellectually refute or dismiss. Rather, it is the very stuff of your life which informs you in a powerfully experiential (not just intellectual) way about yourself. It almost makes self-observation a sacred, affirming ritual!
