I was going through some of my old posts and couldn’t help being ‘touched’ by this one, written in August last year. Reading it again, I felt I was back with my brother, my mum and the other members of our family including my brother, Joe’s, carers. I feel like sharing it with you again (for those of you who have previously read it) and with my new readers. I believe it has something important and useful to offer us. Let me know what you think.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. I am currently in Malaysia, returning to Brisbane at the end of this month by which time I would have been here for just over a month. If you have been visiting this blog in the hope of reading new posts, I do apologize for not delivering :-). I have just not been in the ‘space’ to write for this blog. However, you will find more recent posts at one of my other blogs: Longings Enchantments and Sacred Space
My main activity here has been attending to my brother, Joe, who is very slowly waking up from a bed-ridden slumber of over 10 months following brain surgery. Each day, his carers for the last few months and I help to remind him of all those things that he had been able to do and that we tend to take for granted – things like holding an object such as a cup or bending his neck or bringing his cup to his mouth or speaking. Such things, if accomplished, take considerably more time than they used to. It is as if he and we are relearning the most basic movements for survival and for communication. It is an enlightening experience and one which causes me to pause in awe and gratitude for all the ‘little wonders‘ I take for granted.
As I work with his carers on his rehabilitation, I share with them my views on the triune of mind-body-spirit, stressing often the power of the mind in bringing about change on all levels of consciousness – mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. In particular, I encourage them to use the power of the mind to IMAGINE, INTEND and ALLOW.
Put simply, this means directing the mind’s attention to what is desired, imagining it in order to arouse the mind’s emotional support and then stepping out of the way to allow this desire to manifest according to the infinite wisdom/ways of god/universe/life-force/love.
For instance, a simple directing of the mind’s attention to the quality and experience of ’softening’ brings about instant change in the body whereby tension is released from muscles that have been conditioned to remain tense long after the need for such tension is over. Such mental ’softening like jelly’ enables Joe’s body to yield to the free flow of prana or chi or the life-force or the Holy Spirit as I refer to it here, our family being devout Catholics. This makes moving him considerably easier as there is little resistance. Much of the rigidity in his body that his carers have struggled with for months has gone in just over a few days.
These and other occasions demonstrating the power of the mind have reminded me of several references in the Bible of such power, often referred to as the power of ‘faith’ or belief. The story of Jesus walking on the water in a storm is an illustration of just such faith. Whether you take the story literally or metaphorically, you are invited to consider the power of faith or belief particularly when Peter, so impressed by Christ’s power, asks Christ to call him over so that he too may accomplish the same feat. He does, until his attention wavers from Christ (what he loves and wants) to the storm (what he fears and does not want) whereupon he starts to sink. Christ holds out his hand to him saying “Oh man of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Mathew 14:31).
In Chapter 9, Verse 29, Mathew again quotes Christ: It is done to you as you believe.
Recognizing the truth that everything is possible because every possibility already exists in the infinite universe of infinite possibilities isn’t hard to do. What stands in most people’s way is their reluctance to believe because they cannot figure out how a particular possibility will manifest.
Using the limited vision and information of our conditioned mind, many things do indeed appear impossible. But when we recognize that what we ’see’ and ‘believe’ is the result of our conditioning which, being bound to our anthropomorphic pretext, ignores our unconditioned, infinite, divine subtext, then we must conclude that all things are possible even if we do not know how these possibilities will manifest. And because we don’t know, it helps if we i.e. our ego/conditioned mind simply steps out of the way and allows the infinite power to work in its own way.
All this power requires from us is the expression of our desire, the direction of our attention to this desire and the permission to do its work freely i.e. without our interference, our dictates, our limits, our fears, our doubts. In other words, let’s not worry or meddle with the HOW and instead enjoy directing our mind’s attention to the WHAT!

Very well put.
I think that, along with the lack of faith, many times we are unable to manifest what we desire because we do not feel worthy.
We have ‘learned’ (not necessarily been taught) over the years that we are not good enough to have or experience the good life.
Once we begin to believe (have the faith) that we are valued and to love ourselves, the good life begins to manifest.
Life is as good as I allow it to be.

Hi Dave
Thanks so much for your comment.
Yes, the mind of unworthiness is so prevalent, and often so well hidden beneath layers of socialization in the form of modesty, humility, guilt, failure…all of which are rooted in fear and the sense of separation.
