Most of us find it easy enough to say ‘Thank you’ most of the time. There are occasions, however, when we say the words without really meaning it or feeling it. To some degree, it is a social convention most of us are prepared to observe. In fact, it can annoy us when others do not observe it the way we expect them to. When was the last time you said ‘Thank you’ and really meant it, i.e. felt it?
The act of feeling a ‘thank you’ is what I consider part of the act of ‘gratitude’. The other part of the act of gratitude is a deep knowing, a recognition, if you like, of the goodness of something or someone. So, gratitude involves both a feeling and a deep knowing. It is far more than the utterance of a couple of words or even performing actions for both may be offered as ‘repayment’ rather than the recognition of goodness! You see, you can never be truly grateful without recognizing that what you are grateful for is in fact good J
